| summary | The ecology of fear helps us to understand how the behavior of animals is shaped by the fear of predation. Zebra finches are one of the most studied passerine birds, are native to a harsh and unpredictable environment, the Australian desert, and are at the very bottom of the animal food chain. The ecology of fear of the zebra finch has, to the best of our knowledge, never been addressed and offers the potential for new insights into the ecology, particularly the foraging activities, of this model songbird. Series of experiments investigating environmental and social contexts have been done under experimental conditions and in the wild. Our results suggests that the ecology of fear perspective is a straightforward and relevant way to determine conditions in which an animal feels more or less safe, additionally this approach can add an important new tool to explore welfare questions in captive animals. |
