summaryThe Allen Institute has built a unique pipeline for in vivo physiology: the Allen Brain Observatory. As of October 2018, we have used this observatory to share calcium imaging data from ~60,000 cells from 221 running mice viewing standard visual stimuli; in October 2019, we plan to release Neuropixels electrophysiology recordings from ~100,000 cells from 100 mice under the same conditions. These rich and comprehensive public datasets enable scientists to conduct sophisticated analyses of neural activity without the need to run their own experiments. But what happens when these analyses generate new hypotheses that need to be tested? We plan to close the loop between data analysis and data generation by opening our Brain Observatory pipeline to the community, creating a public observatory of the mind, analogous to astronomical observatories that survey the night sky. Our observatory, called OpenScope, will accept proposals from external scientists on a yearly cycle, which will be reviewed by a panel of leading experts for their feasibility and scientific merit. Jérôme Lecoq joined the Allen Institute in 2015 to lead efforts in mapping cortical computation using in vivo two-photon microscopy in behaving animals. He brings 10 years of experience in in vivo microscopy working with rodents. Prior to joining the Allen Institute, Lecoq was a postdoctoral scholar in Mark Schnitzer’s group at Stanford University, where he developed novel imaging methodologies to monitor large neuronal populations in the visual cortex of behaving mice.  Lecoq received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris and an M.S. in Physics from ESPCI ParisTech, a French multidisciplinary engineering school. The Allen Institute for Brain Science is a Seattle-based independent, nonprofit medical research organization dedicated to accelerating the understanding of how the human brain works. With the intent of catalyzing brain research in different areas, the Allen Institute provides free data and tools to scientists.
