summary | This talk is based on recently published work with Chris Bentz, Annemarie Verkerk and Gerhard Jäger (doi:10.1038/s41562-018-0457-6), where we use quantitative methods for detecting the phylogenetic signal of several non-linguistic factors in a large set of language families. I will first present the methods and the data, moving on to the actual results and what they may mean. In a nutshell, we found that the way language families spread and differentiate is affected quite generally by geography, but there are also particular cases where other factors, such as altitude or population size, seem to have played a role. Thus, this is yet another way in which language is affected by aspects of the environment experienced by its users and helps place language firmly within the natural world. |
