| summary | The quantity and quality of input children hear play a large role in the development of young children’s language skills and account for a large amount of individual variation. However, there are also child-level factors that influence language learning and outcomes. The first part of this talk focuses on the role of phonological memory as a child-level factor that predicts individual variation in development of English and Spanish expressive vocabulary skills from 30 months to 5 years in 126 Spanish-English learning bilingual children. The second part of this talk describes the development of speech production skills in 20 English-speaking children with cochlear implants, ages 3 to 8 years, considering language skills and hearing age as influences on speech skills. |
