| summary | It is said that 1 in 5 of the population are affected by serious speech disorders at some point in their lifetime, and some people are affected by these disorders throughout their lives. Speech is the primary means of human communication, as well as a strong factor in how we judge, perceive, think and understand. Speech disorders therefore have serious implications on society as well as on the affected individuals.
Like in many other aspects of life, technology has the potential to play an important part in handling speech disorders. Yet researchers have been slow to work in this area. In this talk we first consider how computational technology can play a wider part in combating general speech disorders, before we focus on research into one area of disorder caused by degraded glottis function. We will look at reconstruction methods for this disorder (known as whisper-to-speech reconstruction) and make a brief foray into associated technology such as ultrasonic speech and big data-driven AI for speech. |
