summaryLeadership is typically associated with behavioral and trait expectations that coincide with the male gender stereotype. However, research on the “glass cliff” suggests that women and other minority groups likely are preferred as leaders in times of crisis and that the “think manager-think male” association is mainly found for healthy organizational contexts. Research on the contextual circumstances and motivations for crisis-female or crisis-minority associations in organizations and in politics has revealed a number of potential explanations for this phenomenon. In my talk, I will focus on my labs’ recent findings on the role of stereotypes and the attribution of change potential to minority group individuals as a function of decision-taker’s ideologies and the specific crisis context. I will further present preliminary findings on the glass cliff in the COVID-19 crisis.
