summaryThe goal of this talk is to provide an exhaustive description and analysis of the major word order changes affecting the clausal and the nominal domains in the passage from Old to Modern Romanian, couched within an up-to-date theoretical framework. After introducing periodization of the Romanian language and the methodology, we set out to discuss the major points in diachronic word order variation. In order to genuinely depict and describe diachronic variation, the Old Romanian data are set in contrast with the Modern Romanian ones. The talk is explicitly comparative: (Old) Romanian is contrasted with older stages of its sister Romance languages, but also with the languages spoken in the Balkan Sprachbund, all with the explicit goal of identifying the particular features of Romanian.
