| summary | How should groups decide between various alternatives? One popular approach begins with a voting method. Normative criteria (axioms) are then invoked to compare different voting methods. In this paper, we explore a slightly different approach and instead consider the distribution of satisfaction associated with different methods. We argue based on computer simulation and an analysis of polling data that welfarists of different stripes (utilitarian, prioritarian, egalitarian, sufficientarian) will find the same voting method (the Borda count) especially attractive. |
