summaryWe will propose and then analyze a variational problem that models the setting of nematic liquid crystals in which nematic and isotropic phases coexist. The novelty here is the assumption of wide disparity in the relevant elastic constants which leads to the prediction of singular phase boundaries, reminiscent of tactoids seen in experiments. This is joint work with Dmitry Golovaty (Akron), Michael Novack (UTAustin) and Raghav Venkatraman (Courant).
