summarySpeakers combine speech with gestures to communicate with each other. This talk will focus on one aspect of speech, linguistic prosody, that joins forces with body movements to express and comprehend linguistic meaning. The interplay between prosody and body movements is particularly intriguing in language development, because the infants' and children's use of these strategies seems to preceed, and even boostrap, the emergene of other linguistic abilities. I will present evidence that young infants perceive the temporal interconnectedness between prosodic and gesture cues before entering the lexical stage, and that they use this sensitivity to process the pragmatic intent of basic speech acts, I will also show that later in development body gestures precede, and entrain, the emergence of prosodic abilities for pragmatic purposes, and that children with neurodevelopmental disorders may benefit from these multimodal cues to overcome their linguistic and pragmatic deficits.
