| summary | The irrealis as a comparative, typological category has been the object of much heated debate in the general typological literature, from (Bybee 1998) to (de Haan 2012) and (von Prince, Krajinović & Krifka 2022). Like the latter reference, and capitalizing on recent work (Caudal 2023; Caudal et al. 2024), the present talk will substantiate the claim that irrealis is a typologically meaningful concept, especially within the confines of the Australian phylum, where language-specific irrealis categories present striking morphological and semantic convergences. To that effect, it will resort to three complementary methods, namely (i) a quantitative typological analysis of a significant language sample, (ii) qualitative fieldwork on a smaller set of strategically chosen languages, and (iii) a panchronic analysis of (i) and (ii) as possible indicators of recurrent (and even possibly cyclic, albeit in a mild sense) language change processes in the Australian irrealis domain. … |
