| summary | It has been a long-standing idea that tactile stimuli are automatically recoded in a 3D-like spatial code, often referred to as “external reference frame of touch”. I will present the idea (and some evidence) that touch is coded only anatomically, and that external coding is relevant for coding limb position (not stimuli). I will re-interpret well-known errors in tactile paradigms as indicating coding of the limbs’ current and default postures and incorrect assignment of tactile stimuli to a body part. I’ll integrate this with how we can make movements to tactile locations despite touch not being coded spatially. |
