summaryBody image problems and associated maladaptive eating behaviors (such as dieting or binge eating) are already frequently reported during childhood and adolescence. Investigating risk and protective factors in the development of these problems is necessary as it may inform developmental models of psychopathology, and may identify crucial components which can foster youth’s resilience and are important to include in prevention and intervention programs. The general aim of this talk is to provide an overview of some recent studies using different methodologies within our research lab that aim to increase knowledge on (1) the course of maladaptive eating attitudes and behaviors throughout childhood and adolescence and (2) which bio-psycho-social factors may add to the explanation of these maladaptive eating attitudes and behaviors. Next, it will be discussed how this knowledge may act as a starting point for developing and testing interventions to prevent eating problems and to strengthen resilience of today’s youth.
