summaryThis study aims to provides a preliminary overview of the strategies for encoding motion events in Mauritian Creole according to Talmy’s extended typology (as in e.g. Slobin 2004b, Noguchi 2011, Beavers et. al. 2009), alongside a comparison with some languages which contributed (or may have contributed) to the formation of Mauritian Creole. Following this overview, the uses for depi ‘from’ are explored. While Kriegel et. al. (2008) attributes the uses, and/or the continuation of these uses to Bhojpuri, this study rather proposes a convergence analysis for ablative uses of depi, and Malagasy as a more plausible source of depi-depi ‘from-until’ sequences.
