summaryWelfare of animal is its positive mental and physical state as related to the fulfilment of its physiological and behavioral needs in addition to its expectation. This state can vary depending on the animal’s perception of a given situation” (ANSES 2018). This definition suggests that we, humans, are able to assess the mental state of the non-human animals. Moreover, if positive mental state exists, it is necessary to question the existence of an animal mental health. This idea is clearly accepted for preclinical models of psychiatric disorders, also for pets. But it is not so evident for farm animals. The aim of my talk is to present the RDoC framework that could be used for evaluating mental health in farm animals. After sharing different definitions and concepts, I will present the question of assessment methods. In humans, this issue was also discussed, leading the creation of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC).
