summaryThis work aims to enhance the theory of Dynamic Asymmetry by including symmetric head-head structures, the inevitable first step of any derivation, dubbed as “ignition". The symmetry-breaking “repair” options available give rise to basic head-initial and head-final word orders. One of the consequences of this approach is that all word-order parameters reduce to head movement options. We take this to be a conceptual advance for the theory of word order variation. This approach and the empirical data discussed here also provide us with a unique opportunity to consider the role of labelling and linearization in the architecture of universal grammar.
