summaryIn recent years, more women are encouraged to pursue careers in science and many scientific disciplines have tried to solve pervasive gender imbalances in academia. Recent surveys show that half of PhD students in neuroscience are women. Yet, the same studies show that women only make up 30.8% of tenure-track and 13.8% of tenured full professor positions. Women from historically excluded backgrounds are even more underrepresented and face added challenges in their path to academia. Stories of Women in Neuroscience (Stories of WiN) aims to increase the visibility of women in neuroscience, by sharing the scientific and personal stories of women researchers with diverse backgrounds, identities, research interests and career stages. While there is no single path to a successful career in neuroscience, from the over 90 women profiled thus far we’ve seen that their diverse experiences have common threads, such as the importance of positive early research experiences, managing imposter syndrome, the necessity of work–life balance, and the challenges of fitting into—or resisting—the “scientist mold” within a patriarchal, racialized academic system. In this seminar I will explore, through the lens of women highlighted by our team, the similarities in their journeys, and highlight specific actionable items for recruiting, supporting and retaining women in the field.
