| summary | In science, imagination is valued for its ability to help us question things we think we know, including rules and standards. In this talk, I argue that this simple fact about imagination, combined with its presence at the heart of many fundamental scientific practices, presents an obstacle for any philosophy of science that has three qualities : a) it attempts to explain the epistemic value of science synchronically, b) it focuses on the "content" of science (e.g., model systems, the objects of experiment, the propositional content of theories, etc.), and c) it is veritist (i.e., it claims that all epistemic goodness reduces somehow or other to truth). I argue that most current epistemologies of science do in fact have these qualities, and I reject their responses to the obstacle that imagination presents. I sketch a fundamentally different epistemic approach to science, one that can handle the success of science as well as the importance of imagination. |
