summaryAgeing is a growing concern in many countries. Projections suggest that older adults (aged 65+) will comprise 25% of the global population by 2035. Although people are living longer, they are not necessarily living well. Many older adults are at risk of social isolation, which is associated with poor health and well-being. Given these projections and consequences, solutions that help older adults to stay connected are paramount. Drawing from the social identity approach to health and knowledge about arts practice, this work proposes that group-based arts interventions (e.g., music, drawing, theatre, writing) may be one intervention that can help older adults to live and age well. Findings from a meta-analysis of the existing literature as well as qualitative and quantitative results from work with community-based arts organisations will be used to demonstrate that group-based arts interventions are an important provision to help older adults to feel connected and engaged, and to promote well-being.
