| summary | The linguistic representation of gender in the German language and in monolingual German dictionaries (‘gendering’) has sparked many heated debates in Germany in recent years.
In my lecture, I will first give a brief overview of the forms of gendering in German since the 1980s and how society has reflected on this issue.
I will then explain the process of establishing a position on this topic in the Duden editorial office at the end of the 1990s and the implementation of the (discussion and research) results in dictionaries over the last 30 years.
My observations will focus on the changes made by the editorial team to entries from 2021 onwards, particularly in Duden online, and their consequences for the form of the generic masculine and its use. I will also show that there is no one form that is suitable for all dictionaries, but that the representations in the various dictionaries differ depending on the target audience.
Finally, I take a look at spelling issues related to the use of so-called gender symbols such as the gender star (Lehrer*innen) and gender colon (Lehrer:innen) and the current regulatory status in the seven member states of the Council for German Spelling. |
