summaryWhen we recollect an event, our memories are a combination of what we specifically remember happening, and what we think should have happened. In this talk, I will present work aiming to tease apart the brain systems that represent what usually happens in any given situation, from the brain systems that process what actually happens. These issues will be investigated through the lens of fMRI, and tasks involving sitcoms, chat-shows and film snippets. I will particularly focus on situations that are unexpected or surprising, and the effect that this has on our memories and the neural processes that underpin them.
