summaryThis talk presents a data-based description of a small set of serial verb constructions (SVCs) in Djuka (Ndyuka), an English-lexifier creole spoken in Suriname and French Guiana. Serial verb constructions are commonly defined as sequences of verbs that form a single clause, without overt coordination or subordination, and that share a single domain for tense, aspect, and polarity. The focus is on the internal organization of verbal material in asymmetrical SVCs (in the sense of Aikhenvald 2006), based on elicited data checked with a native speaker. Descriptive grammars of Djuka and related Nengee languages document many cases of serialization [e.g. Huttar and Huttar, 1994, Goury and Migge, 2017], but they do not aim to provide a formal syntactic analysis of these constructions. The goal is to identify stable ordering patterns inside the SVCs (e.g. cause, motion, action, result, benefactive, completive) and to propose a first structural sketch.
