summaryThis presentation aims to show how ontologies (cross-connected networks of domain-specific concepts) can be used to investigate Motion-event descriptions, within the SpOTy project (Spatial Ontology and Typology, ASLAN, Université de Lyon). First, we'll introduce the notion of ontology as a knowledge engineering tool to specify a domain of interest. Then we'll show how to prepare linguistic data to be used with an ontological graph and create a database. Finally we'll search our database to investigate the semantic domain of Path (how is Path encoded? do different types of Path have different encoding? how do Path interact with other constituents of motion descriptions, such as Manner or Deixis?).
