summaryThe entorhinal cortex (EC)–hippocampal circuit is the first to exhibit neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). I will present data on the use of spatial behavioural tests to detect the earliest stages of AD and will discuss the relevance of early detection for future drug treatment. The talk will also cover emerging evidence that this circuit may be selectively implicated in protection against AD, and will explore the hypothesis that aggregation of pathological tau in the EC–hippocampal circuit is the key molecular-anatomical event in the development of AD.
