summaryIn this talk, I will describe emergent approaches in neuroimaging to study variation in subjects with individual-level precision. Accordingly, Precision Functional Mapping (PFM) involves acquiring larger quantities of fMRI data within single individuals over time and departs from conventional studies that collect small datasets across many subjects. This new “precision” approach that shift analysis from groups to individuals represents a promising tool for psychiatric clinical settings aimed at tailored interventions, possibly providing prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers as well as therapeutic targets with individual-level precision. I will then present data from a precision imaging study of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), a condition characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviours, linked to dysfunction in frontostriatal circuits. Leveraging PFM, our findings provide evidence for a novel dual-network imbalance model of OCD. Specifically, we observed expansion of a frontostriatal salience network and contraction of the frontoparietal network, suggesting network boundaries are reshaped in OCD. These alterations may underlie excessive attention to internal stimuli and diminished goal-directed control, hallmark features of the disorder. Finally, I will highlight how the longitudinal design of PFM allows tracking variations in brain function over days to months, addressing a critical gap given the dynamic nature of psychiatric symptoms. Together, these results illustrate how precision imaging can refine our understanding of psychiatric disorders and lay the groundwork for individualized biomarkers and interventions.
