summaryCross-linguistic and cross-cultural diversity in spatial behaviour, including frame of reference choice, is well-established. Recent research has now begun to reveal considerable diversity within communities, correlating with group-level and individual variables. Sociotopography attempts to model the interaction of factors including perception of landforms, cultural interaction with environment, cultural adaptation, neurological responses, education and literacy, age, gender, linguistic resources, and patterns of language use. However, the role of all these factors in mediating between environment and spatial cognition remains under-investigated. Focusing on frame of reference, this talk draws together new cognitive and linguistic findings from Indigenous Australia, Mesoamerica, South America, the Middle East, and North Asia, in disciplines from anthropology and linguistics to cognitive neuroscience. Considerably more work is needed to develop a fuller understanding of the interface between the diverse factors that interact in constructing conceptual representations of space. The new findings synthesised here cast important light on the way humans respond to and manipulate their environments across a range of cognitive modalities, and point to diverse interdisciplinary future directions in this program of research.
