summaryThe general theme of the lec?tures is the emerging field of cog?nitive semi?otics (CS), which com?bines methods and the?ories from cog?nitive science, semi?otics and lin?guistics in investig?a?tions of the mul?ti?fa?ceted concept of meaning. A general ambition of CS is to address long lasting problems related to "mind and body", "nature and culture", "individual and society" and thus con?tribute to mending the gap between natural science and the human?ities, without attempting to reduce one to the other. The first two lec?tures will be the most general ones, intro?ducing CS and providing a general overview of major con?cepts, methods and fields of inquiry. The second pair of lec?tures will be devoted to human biocultural evol?ution, proposing a theory of what allowed our ancestors to develop unique char?ac?ter?istics in the animal kingdom, and for cumu?lative cultural evol?ution, and even?tually lan?guage, to emerge. The third pair will be devoted to ontogeny, focusing on the par?allel devel?opment of speech and gesture. The final pair will concern two phe?nomena of lin?guistic semantics that have remained con?tro?versial, and where the cognitive semiotic approach can offer new insights: sen?tences of "fictive motion" (e.g. "The road goes through the forest") and sound symbolism.
