| summary | I shall argue that there are no sui generis values or norms attaching to beliefs. It is uncontroversial that certain kinds of belief are morally or personally valuable: most obviously, it is often morally or personally valuable that beliefs be true. But there are no further sui generis values or norms which somehow flow from the nature of belief. In particular, no such norms arise because truth is in some sense the 'aim of belief'. Even if pursuit of this aim were constitutive of the state of believing, this would only show that such pursuit is part of a certain practice, and leaves open the question of whether there is any value to engaging in this practice." |
